“If we do a little research, we find that the people who are most at risk of getting cancer, and who are also the most likely to die, are people of color,” said Dr. R.J. Coughlin, president and CEO of the American Cancer Society.
“People of color, especially people of lower socioeconomic status, have lower levels of health care access and they are also at higher risk for the development of cancers of the breast, colon and prostate.
So if we look at the community of the cancer patients that we see and see what we can do to help them, we have an opportunity to help the community.”
Dr. Croughlin said it’s important to remember that the majority of the population is not at risk, and that there is a lot of work to be done.
“But what we do know is that the communities that are most affected by the cancer are also people who don’t have the same resources as other communities,” he said.
“They have less social support, they have less access to health care, they are less likely to have access to a high-quality health care system.
They have less health insurance and so there is an enormous opportunity for them to access resources.”
To help support cancer research and research into the causes and treatment of cancer, the American Medical Association (AMA) recently released its Cancer Action Plan, which includes a “Vision 2030” agenda to improve the health and well-being of cancer patients, their families and caregivers.
Dr. Josephine Hinton, CEO of MassageWorks, said the AMA’s “Vision 2020” is the foundation of the plan.
“The ‘Vision 2020’ is really the roadmap for how we will do the work we do to provide care for our patients,” she said.
MassageRx, the largest massage and bodywork business in the United States, has been committed to improving care for the community and improving access to care for cancer patients since it was founded in 2006.
“We have a commitment to making sure that our clients have access,” said Ms. Hinton.
“So we’re working on our own mission to make sure that we’re delivering the care we need for patients.
We’re also committed to making it affordable.”
MassageLoft, a national nonprofit company based in Atlanta, has worked with more than 10,000 cancer patients and their families, including over 300,000 women and men diagnosed with breast cancer.
“If you look at what we have seen with breast and colon cancer, we’ve seen the community heal,” said CEO Jennifer DeAngelis.
“It’s really just an extension of our mission to provide support to the community to ensure that their needs are met and that they can continue to access care.
We believe that when people have access, they will be happier and healthier.”
Massages are a way to connect with the community while providing access to the best care possible, and they have proven to be incredibly helpful in reducing the spread of the disease, Dr. DeAngelides said.
The MassageShop, a company that specializes in massage services for women and their partners, has helped women who have had a mastectomy find a place to get their mastectomy done.
It has also helped women with their first surgery find a safe and comfortable place to do their procedures.
DeLuca and Hinton said the idea of massages was born out of the need to give back.
“Massage is not only for the people around us,” said DeLucas.
“As a cancer patient, I felt like a whole lot of the time you’re not alone in your pain and anxiety and fear and you don’t really have any friends that are there to support you.”
